Spon|gi|o|se [griech. spoggiá = Schwamm; ↑ -ose (2)], die; -, -n; Syn.: Graphitisierung (2): bei Gusseisen beobachtbare Form der Korrosion unter Bildung schwammiger, an Ferrit (1) u. Perlit (1) verarmter Strukturen.

Spongiose
 
[zu lateinisch], schwammige Zersetzung des Gusseisens, tritt z. B. in Rohren auf und wird durch die durchgeleitete Flüssigkeit (besonders sauerstoffarme Wässer) bewirkt. Bei der Spongiose werden der Ferrit und der Perlit aufgelöst, es bleibt ein poröses Gerüst aus Graphit, Karbiden, Nitriden und Phosphiden zurück.
